HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN EARN SERVICE HOURS THIS SUMMER AT THE CLERK’S OFFICE

Special volunteer orientations scheduled for March, May

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (February 29, 2012) – High school students who want to earn community service hours this summer with the Clerk & Comptroller’s office should plan to attend a special orientation session to learn about volunteering opportunities available at the Clerk’s office.

Sessions are scheduled for Friday, March 2, and for Friday, May 4. Both sessions will be at 3 p.m. in the Clerk & Comptroller’s Learning Center, on the fifth floor of the Main Courthouse, 205 N. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach.

Students only need to attend one of the two information sessions to volunteer with the Clerk’s office.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to get a taste of what it’s like to work in our justice system,” said Clerk Sharon Bock. “We want student volunteers who are motivated and interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at our operations.”

Students must be at least 15 years old to volunteer with the Clerk & Comptroller’s office, and must pass required background checks. Students between 15 and 17 years old will be required to complete a parental consent form.

Volunteers will learn skills such as proper business etiquette, data entry, and how to use courthouse software and office equipment.

Interested students who can’t attend one of the two orientation sessions should visit www.mypalmbeachclerk.com/volunteer to apply online or for more information.

The Florida Constitution established the independent office of the Clerk & Comptroller as a public trustee, responsible for safeguarding public records and public funds. Clerk Sharon Bock is directly elected by and accountable to Palm Beach County residents.  In addition to the roles of Clerk of the Circuit Court, County Recorder and Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk & Comptroller is the Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Auditor for Palm Beach County.
