WEST PALM BEACH, FL (November 27, 2013) – For the eighth consecutive year, the Clerk & Comptroller’s annual cell phone drive for Domestic Violence Awareness Month ended in another success, thanks to the generosity of the Palm Beach County community.
Clerk Sharon Bock delivered nearly 300 cell phones collected for victims of domestic abuse throughout October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Along with the phones, Clerk’s office employees collected more than 20 boxes of shampoo, soap, toothpaste and other items necessary to help people transitioning from abusive situations to a safe, new environment.
The phones and personal care items all were donated to Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) and the YWCA Harmony House, Palm Beach County’s two state-licensed domestic violence shelters.
“In the past month alone, we have seen several high-profile domestic violence cases, which underscores the need for these critical services,” Clerk Bock said. “This annual collection is our way of helping those who are in abusive situations. Our goal is to encourage victims of domestic violence to seek emergency shelter and receive the help they need.”
The Clerk’s office is often a first stop for many domestic abuse victims, who visit the office to file injunctions against their abusers. The Clerk’s Domestic Violence Department has many resources for victims, including information about how to file an injunction or complaint, answers to frequently asked questions, and contact information for agencies that assist domestic abuse victims.
AVDA and YWCA Harmony House will give all donated items to people seeking refuge at the shelters. Donated phones will be refurbished before they are distributed for use in making emergency calls. Those phones that cannot be refurbished are recycled, with the proceeds going back to the domestic violence agencies.
“Giving back to the community is an important part of our culture at the Clerk’s office,” Clerk Bock said. “I’m proud of the work we do in support of these deserving organizations, and many others throughout the county.”
