CLERK & COMPTROLLER OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS SEEKING COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS

The office’s volunteer program is a win-win for all!

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (May 26, 2010) – High school students need community service hours, and we need volunteers. With summer break coming in just a few weeks, why not consider earning those hours with the Clerk & Comptroller’s office?

We have orientation sessions coming up soon for any students interested in joining us this summer or year-round. Students must be at least 15 years old to volunteer with the Clerk’s office, and must pass required background checks. Students between 15 and 17 years old must also have parental consent. Volunteers will learn:

  • Business etiquette
  • Data entry
  • Filing alphabetically and numerically
  • Organization of legal pleadings (We receive approximately 15,000 pleadings a week)
  • To listen effectively
  •  To be detail oriented
  • Accuracy
  • Organizational skills
  • Use of office equipment
  • Courthouse software

Our volunteers can set their own hours, and work anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Interested? You can apply here, or go to www.mypalmbeachclerk.com/volunteer.aspx for more information.

The Clerk’s office currently has more than 100 volunteers of all ages at the Main Courthouse and at the Governmental Center in West Palm Beach; at the North County Courthouse in Palm Beach Gardens; at the South County Courthouse in Delray Beach; and at the West County Courthouse in Belle Glade. Last year, volunteers worked more than 16,000 hours, for an estimated taxpayer savings of $334,000.

The Florida Constitution established the independent office of the Clerk & Comptroller as a public trustee, responsible for safeguarding public records and public funds. Clerk Sharon Bock is directly elected by and accountable to Palm Beach County residents.  In addition to the roles of Clerk of the Circuit Court, County Recorder and Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk & Comptroller is the Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Auditor for Palm Beach County.
