Record-setting 342 phones donated to help Palm Beach County abuse victims

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (November 10, 2011) – Clerk Sharon Bock on Thursday distributed 342 donated cell phones among three Palm Beach County domestic violence agencies, which will disburse them to domestic abuse victims to make emergency calls.

The 342 phones collected by the Clerk’s office set a record for the cell phone donation drive, now in its sixth year. The drive is part of the Clerk’s office’s observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is in October.

This record-setting collection includes generous donations from Clerk’s office employees, Palm Beach County Water Utilities, the Palm Beach County Tax Collector, and the Exchangettes of the Northern Palm Beaches.

“People throughout our community really stepped up to help this year,” said Clerk Sharon Bock. “I’m grateful to everyone who contributed to help us help victims of domestic violence.”

The phones were split evenly between three agencies: Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, the Florida Resource Center for Women and Children, and the YWCA’s Harmony House. The agencies will send the donated phones to be refurbished and then distributed to their clients, who can use them to make emergency calls. The phones also can be connected with service providers so abuse victims – who often arrive at shelters with nothing – can use the phones for other calls as well.

Those phones that can’t be refurbished are recycled, with money going back to the domestic violence agencies.

The Clerk’s office is often a first stop for many domestic abuse victims, who visit the office to file injunctions against their abusers. The Clerk’s office’s Domestic Violence Department has many resources for victims, including information about how to file an injunction or complaint, answers to frequently asked questions, and contact information for agencies that assist domestic abuse victims.

“I’m so proud of my Clerk’s office employees who are helping to make a difference in victims’ lives, whether through our annual phone donation drive or by helping victims who come to our office as they attempt to move past the abuse and move on with their lives,” Clerk Bock said.

The Florida Constitution established the independent office of the Clerk & Comptroller as a public trustee, responsible for safeguarding public records and public funds. Clerk Sharon Bock is directly elected by and accountable to Palm Beach County residents.  In addition to the roles of Clerk of the Circuit Court, County Recorder and Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk & Comptroller is the Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Auditor for Palm Beach County.
