More Than $1.2 Million Donated by Clerk Employees to Nonprofits Since 1994

WEST PALM BEACH, FL. – The Clerk & Comptroller, Palm Beach County is marking a significant milestone this year: More than $1.2 million in cash donations and volunteer hours given by the office’s employees to local nonprofit organizations since 1994.

Through the “Clerks for a Cause” program, employees have donated $1 million in cash to more than 100 nonprofit organizations, and volunteered more than 10,900 hours to charitable causes. The equivalent cash value of this volunteer time is approximately $225,000, bringing the total to $1.2 million over 25 years.

Clerk & Comptroller Sharon R. Bock, Esq., will celebrate her office’s million-dollar achievement during the annual “Money Drop” holiday performance by Circuit Sound, the Clerk’s employee choir. The “Money Drop” concert is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in the atrium of the Palm Beach County Governmental Center.

“Every dollar and volunteer hour donated through our Clerks for a Cause program benefits the important work the nonprofits do in our community,” Clerk Bock said. “I’m proud to celebrate the $1.2 million milestone with my team and with the people we serve every day.”

What is now known as Clerks for a Cause began in 1994, during Clerk Dorothy Wilken’s tenure. The program expanded after Clerk Bock’s election in 2004, and over the past 16 years has supported at least 65 different nonprofit organizations in Palm Beach County.

“Our Clerks for a Cause program gives our staff an opportunity to help define their individual purpose outside of work alone,” Clerk Bock said. “Through this program, every one of our nearly 700 employees have an opportunity to connect with a nonprofit organization that is meaningful to them, and support that organization through volunteer time and charitable donations. Our employees believe in the Clerks for a Cause program, and their dedication has made it successful.”

The Clerk & Comptroller’s charitable giving efforts reach their pinnacle every December, during the “Money Drop” concert in the Governmental Center atrium. The Clerk's Choir performs holiday songs while people drop money from the six floors above to help a local family in need.

This year’s recipient of “Money Drop” proceeds is Dakota Cappel, a 3-year-old West Palm Beach boy diagnosed with leukemia at 16 months old. Dakota and his family were nominated for the 2019 “Season to Share” campaign by Pediatric Oncology Support Team Inc., to help cover Dakota’s rising medical bills and other household expenses. During this year’s concert, Clerk Bock will also present checks to five local nonprofit groups from the office’s Dress Down Program. The Dress Down Program is funded by Clerk employees who voluntarily donate money through payroll deductions, which allows team members to wear jeans to work on Fridays and other select days.

The Clerk's employee-led Charitable Giving Committee accepts nominations and employees vote on the charities that receive the donations.
