Clerk Bock Puts Palm Beach County Finances at Your Fingertips!

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (May 19, 2009) – Do you want to know what Palm Beach County government does with your hard-earned tax dollars? Get answers right now in the third edition of Checks & Balances: Your Guide to County Finances available at www.mypalmbeachclerk.com. Clerk Sharon Bock released the user-friendly report today during a “Fiscal Year 2008 Year-End Financial Review” presentation to the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. The easy-to-read Checks & Balances citizen guide is produced annually by the Clerk & Comptroller’s office and highlights current challenges impacting taxpayers and Palm Beach County government. This year’s edition includes the impact of tax reform and the sluggish economy on the county’s financial health, the safety of taxpayer investments, the cost per taxpayer for governmental expenses and much more.

“With less money to go around, it is more important than ever that our elected leaders make fiscally responsible decisions while using our tax dollars,” said Clerk Bock. “It is just as important for citizens to understand how your tax dollars are managed and spent.”

As the independent Chief Financial Officer for the County, the Clerk Bock is committed to examining how your tax dollars are spent, educating the public about County financial matters, and promoting transparency and accountability in County government. The office is the accountant, treasurer and auditor for the County - handling finances, investments and financial reporting. The Checks & Balances guide contains condensed and simplified information, mostly from the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), a more detailed report the office produces at the end of each fiscal year which includes roughly 200 pages of financial statements and reports. At just over 20 pages, Checks & Balances is a much shorter, easier read that is intended for the general public. All previous editions of Checks & Balances and the CAFR have been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association for excellence.

In the interest of educating and informing residents about County finances, the Clerk has also made other publications available online. Visit www.mypalmbeachclerk.com to find Checks & Balances, FY2008 CAFR, the Annual Investment Guide and the recent Debt Issuance Process Review. For more information, call the Clerk & Comptroller’s office at (561) 355-2912.

The Florida Constitution established the independent office of the Clerk & Comptroller as a public trustee, responsible for safeguarding public records and public funds. Clerk Sharon Bock is directly elected by and accountable to Palm Beach County residents. In addition to the roles of Clerk of the Circuit Court, County Recorder and Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk & Comptroller is the Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Auditor for Palm Beach County.
